Which Cat Will Win the 1st Howard Schnellenberger MVP Award?

Category: Football

Today the Louisville Sports Commission (Whatever the heck that is) announced that the most valuable player in this year’s Governor’s Cup will receive the Howard Schnellenberger MVP Award.

“It is a source of great pride for me to become a part of the Governor’s Cup Football Game,” the ex-Wildcat player and cardinal coach said, “This intense rivalry has become the defining game for collegiate football within the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”

Schnellenberger  was an All-American tight end at UK under Blanton Collier and later became head coach at Louisville after winning the National Championship while coach at the University of Miami. Schnellenberger currently is head coach and director of football operations at Florida Atlantic University.  He brought his FAU team to Lexington recently to receive a good ol’ fashioned country butt beatin’, but he took it gracefully.

So, is there any doubt who the favorite is to win the inaugural Howard Schnellenberger MVP Award?  I would set the odds like this…

R. Cobb: 2-1

D. Locke: 2.5-1

C. Matthews: 5-1

D. Evans: 5-1

M. Hartline: 6-1

D. Trevathan: 7-1

W. Guy, Jr.: 10-1

Joker Lands Another One

This time it’s Alabama’s Davidson High product Rashad Cunningham for Joker and the coaching staff. Cunningham is a 6’4″ wideout with size and speed and is listed as a 3-star by Scout.com.

Rashad was being courted by the likes of Miss. St., Louisville, Arkansas, Auburn, Alabama, among others.

Cunningham is Joker’s 19th committment for 2011, giving the Cats one of their best recruiting classes thus far.

Whatever Cal and Joker are using I want some! It works!

4 Days Until Kickoff…

The Kentucky vs. Louisville game has no doubt turned into a spring board game for both teams.  The winner gains a huge amount of momentum going into their conference games and normally ends up in a bowl game with a decent record.  We can all agree that a bowl game is very important as Kentucky fans have found out over the past 4 years.  The top 25 recruiting class that the Cats currently lay claim to can be attributed to that fact.  Saying that, it is truly the fans that come away with the most satisfaction when their team wins the Governor’s Cup.  There is no better feeling than having that trump card in your back pocket while discussing sports with a crazed cardinal fan.

This trump card will go down as the greatest in Governor’s Cup history for the Wildcats.  Tom Leach’s call still gives me chills.  The feeling cats fans had when Johnson got into the end zone is something that may never be duplicated.  It never gets old…
