Today the Louisville Sports Commission (Whatever the heck that is) announced that the most valuable player in this year’s Governor’s Cup will receive the Howard Schnellenberger MVP Award.
“It is a source of great pride for me to become a part of the Governor’s Cup Football Game,” the ex-Wildcat player and cardinal coach said, “This intense rivalry has become the defining game for collegiate football within the Commonwealth of Kentucky.”
Schnellenberger was an All-American tight end at UK under Blanton Collier and later became head coach at Louisville after winning the National Championship while coach at the University of Miami. Schnellenberger currently is head coach and director of football operations at Florida Atlantic University. He brought his FAU team to Lexington recently to receive a good ol’ fashioned country butt beatin’, but he took it gracefully.
So, is there any doubt who the favorite is to win the inaugural Howard Schnellenberger MVP Award? I would set the odds like this…
R. Cobb: 2-1
D. Locke: 2.5-1
C. Matthews: 5-1
D. Evans: 5-1
M. Hartline: 6-1
D. Trevathan: 7-1
W. Guy, Jr.: 10-1
