Closing Out On the Perimeter

Earlier today our own Robert Allen Pedigo brought you his version of a post game nonsense. We try not to be over-critical or negative on this site in every post so we decided it would be a good idea to do one post, post-game, that pointed out all the negativity. Good idea or not, Big Blue Nation loves to break down the game.

Whether that be around the water-cooler, through email, text, message boards or post-game call-in shows. We all want to dish out our two cents on what we could be doing better. I want to point out one thing that Rob didn’t touch….

In my opinion, and I could just be being Mr. Obvious, but there is one thing that stands out more then others. The inability to defend on the perimeter.

The simple fact is that this young team is letting teams sneak out wins or sticking around in close games because the opponent is hitting their outside shots. As Bill Cosby would say the proof is in da puddin’. Let’s take a look at how teams have shot from 3 point territory in the Cats losses:

Season Losses
Opponent 3FG %
Uconn 7/12 58.33%
UNC 1/11 9.09%
UGA 3/9 33.33%
Alabama 7/14 50.00%
Ole Miss 8/17 47.06%
Florida 6/19 31.58%
Vandy 11/20 55.00%
Totals 43/102 42.16%

With the exception of the North Carolina loss the Cats have defended the 3 ball poorly. Overall in their combined 7 losses on the year the Cats have allowed opponents to shoot 42.16% from beyond the arc. In 4 of the 7 losses teams have shot above their average on the year.

SEC contests have been equally bad, and worse of late, win or lose, the Cats have allowed SEC opponents to shoot a mind-boggling 42.06% from three.

In Conference Play
Opponent 3FG %
UGA 3/9 33.33%
Auburn 3/11 27.30%
LSU 3/24 12.50%
Alabama 7/14 50.00%
Ole Miss 8/17 47.06%
USC 3/18 16.70%
UGA 4/18 22.20%
Florida 6/19 31.58%
Tenn. 9/16 56.30%
Vandy 11/20 55.00%
Miss. St. 12/22 54.50%
Totals 79/188 42.02%

That is 17 attempts per game by the opponent. In case you were wondering, UK has shot 40% beyond the arc for the season, with Doron Lamb leading the Cats at 49.0%.

UK has made a name for itself for being a solid rebounding team, and most of that can be attributed to good defense, however, if the Cats want to make a run in March they are going to half to stop trading 2′s for 3′s and bunker down on the perimeter.

Completely agree here, 3 losses by 2 points, and several more by a possession or two. Defending the three between could have this team with 2 losses and a number one seed in the tourney.
